did you ever see the movie adaptation of "A Scanner Darkly" never got round to that but it looks interesting.

Nope... sorry... can't answer that. I don't get it either. And to be absolutely honest, I wasn't all that impressed with Sophia Coppola's first film, The Virgin Suicides, either. I think the girl loses sight of the forest focusing on the trees.

I liked the Virgin Suicides but have hated absolutely everything she's done since...

I liked the film okay. By saying I wasn't all that impressed, I mean that on a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a 6.5. She's definitely got style, but I think she focuses too much on style and not enough on story telling.

On another note, last night I watched The Lives of Others (Leben der Anderen, Das) which won the 2007 Oscar for Best Foreign Film, and I'd give that an 8.5 which seems to be the viewer average on imdb. Great film. The only thing stopping me from giving it a 9 is that at 137 mins it went a little over long for my taste.

Love in the time of Cholera

I've seen this book and its beautiful book covers display in local bookstores for quite some time now, and i am very tempted to read it. But I am not one who reads a lot, and books cost quite a lot where I come from,

Yesterday, by chance, i came across its DvD in the store, and immediately bought it as I wanted to know what the story is about and also theres my favourite actor, one Javier Bardem staring in the movie, so I watched it last night.

Now, I just look up this book on wikipedia and found that it is suppose to have been written by theis nobel prize writer.

The story is quite dumb .... at least how the movie portray it, I cannot tell what has Cholera got to do with the whole plot. The most interesting thing in the whole movie was it letter writing, and yet, it wasn't highlighted, and I find in the whole movie the best story told, was when he write love letters to both the boy side and then the girl came and he reply to his own love letters for her.

I also failed to see how this man who lived with his mom, who cry the whole day, who refused to work, even when the mother beg relatives to give him work, he choose to stay in the mothers house until she die... ROFL does someone like this deserved to be love by a beautful woman or anyone at all? I think Fermina made the right choice, sort of. Maybe the book is written better. Oh, and what with this "self-psycho-therapy" of sleeping with hundreds of women suppose to be, like ... blah

so who has watched or read the book?? what was your thoughts?

Dark knight was confusing since i didnt watch the first one....

I didn't watch the first one either, but I liked it and thought it was pretty easy to follow. And of course it's dark. It's the Dark Knight, isn't it? *ninja*

I think Heath Ledger as the Joker just pwned everyone else in the acting department, though. It's a real tragedy he died.

I've read many of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novels. I love his writing. I refused to watch the movie and still refuse to watch it because I can't imagine how they can possibly translate his beautilful prose and surreal story cinematically. My feeling is that any attempt would fail.

Your thoughts help confirm that belief.

On a Javier Bardem side note, did you get to see The Sea Inside yet?

I also strongly recommend Nightwatch/Daywatch, russian scifi with a big nice style for heavy refreshing cinema!

haha, I was looking for The Sea Inside, and found this one instead which was quite disappointing. I should tell my friend about Gabriel's book, she wanted to read Love in time of cholera and was put off after I told her about the movie lol, i suspect the book have to be much much better.
